Glenn and Mandy reclaim the bach vibe

When Glenn and Mandy got together with their architects to plan their Taupo bach rebuild, it was a meeting of creative minds. The result is a beautifully detailed dwelling, and while it’s new, it looks like it has grown over time, as all good baches do. A natural palette based on Resene neutrals and weathered elements was a key ingredient, along with quirky use of materials, like the decommissioned bee boxes used for storage under the kitchen island.

Having trained in textile design, owner Mandy’s eye for colour, pattern and her strong sense of texture made for a very happy collaboration with Belinda Ellis and Fraser Cameron of Fraser Cameron Architects. Together they developed a palette for both the inside and outside of the bach, which pays homage to the longstanding lakeside bach community and works with southern views to the Central Plateau mountains.

A neutral scheme using Resene Concrete and Resene Alabaster gives the bach the impression of far more space than there actually is, and blurs the boundary between inside and out. The architects did away with space-soaking features like hallways, but still achieved good visual separation between the living areas and bedrooms. There’s a great connection to the site, to the lakeside reserve and the views.

Pops of colour were chosen for two of the bedrooms with feature walls in Resene Fountain Blue and Resene Vista Blue.

This colour scheme sits alongside ‘reclaimed colour’ in the form of some decommissioned bee boxes, which are used as storage under the kitchen island bench. Other intriguing materials used in the kitchen include pre-aged copper sheets, bespoke copper finger pulls, blackened plate steel and hoop pine plywood.

Preloved objects, fabrics and furniture collected over many years are paired with new items to lend character.

While the interiors were carefully planned, there’s a playful ‘mismatching’ of bathroom, kitchen and scullery tiles and other fittings such as tapware, pendant lights and door handles.

The teamwork continued outside with Mandy and the architects using rusticated cedar horizontal weatherboards finished with Wood X oil stain in colour Avalanche, available through Resene ColorShops, alongside vertical shiplap painted in Resene White Pointer. The colours evoke Mandy’s northern hemisphere heritage, with elegant, calm and cool Nordic tones.

Decommissioned bee hives act as storage under the kitchen island bench while copper tiles and hoop pine cabinets continue the intriguing mix of materials. A noticeboard to one side is painted in Resene Blackboard Paint.

Sliding wall panels above the fireplace conceal the television and are grooved to refer to the exterior wall claddings. They’re painted in Resene Alabaster, against walls in Resene Concrete.

Looking through the dining area to the deck where the balustrades which have posts painted in Resene Alabaster, contrasted with horizontal cedar battens.

The neutrals palette continues inside with subtle variation to a more defined grey, Resene Concrete, for walls and the black-edged white Resene Alabaster on grooved plywood, ceilings and soffits.

Framed maps sit above one of the strategically placed built-in daybeds which provide extra sleeping for guests as well as storage and enjoyable places to perch during the day.

A shot of water-inspired colour lights up a bedroom with Resene Fountain Blue.

A different fresh aqua was chosen for another bedroom, Resene Vista Blue.

The main bedroom on the main floor of the bach has walls in Resene Concrete and a ceiling in Resene Alabaster.

Small but perfectly formed, the bathrooms have fun hexagonal tiles, hoop pine plywood cabinetry, and Resene Concrete walls.

The layered forms of the house are further accentuated with two types and colours of cladding. Rusticated cedar horizontal weatherboards have been finished with Wood X oil stain in colour Avalanche, available through Resene ColorShops, alongside vertical shiplap painted in Resene White Pointer.
