Bright ideas: Concrete bedside table

You'll need: Resene 10L plastic bucket, premix concrete, a jug of water, testpot in Resene Nero, 3 x wooden dowels, measuring tape, washi tape, and Resene testpots in your chosen colours.

1) Place the premix concrete to a level you'd like the table top to be. Pour in the Resene Nero testpot. Add enough water to wet the concrete, and mix thoroughly.

2) Dig the dowels equally apart in the concrete, as deeply as you can. Pack the concrete tightly around the dowels. This will make it easier to pull the concrete table top out when it's set. Use a measuring tape to check the dowels lengths are equal.

3) Use a damp cloth to wipe away concrete splatters on the dowels. Tape the dowels in place with washi tape, and set aside for seven days.

4) Using washi tape and Resene testpots, create a dipped paint effect on the dowel legs. We've used Resene Half Silver Chalice, Resene Abercrombie and Resene Rolling Fog. Leave to dry.

5) To remove, wiggle the set concrete using the dowels. Don't be afraid to use force (it's concrete!). Admire your clever handiwork, and enjoy your beautiful concrete bedside table!

Top tips

It's important not to overwater the concrete, as this will cause it not to set.

If you're worried about getting the legs even in length, simply use two buckets: mix concrete in the first bucket, and pour a layer into the second bucket. Set the dowels, and then pour in the rest of the concrete around it.

Remove washi tape while paint is drying, to avoid paint from peeling off as well.

Place it somewhere that it won't be knocked over (concrete is heavy!).
