Cam and Deb turn basic into beautiful

When Cam and Deb first bought their 1950s bungalow, it was tired, basic and awash with creamy apricot. They were lucky enough to purchase a house that had good solid bones and lovely natural timber floors… but the apricot had to go.

The couple got to work, picking Resene Concrete, Resene Half Rakaia and Resene White to revive the interior. “I have always loved the fresh look of white and grey together, and I felt like Resene Concrete and Resene Half Rakaia were not cold greys,” says Deb.

“They were slightly warmer than other greys we had looked at while still remaining fresh and clean.”

In the course of one week, Cam prepped, masked and painted every surface of the house, with help from Deb – it's no wonder she calls her husband a DIY extraordinaire.

She tells us more about the house reno.

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors? What was your overall philosophy?

We wanted to freshen and bring life back to our house and have always loved the clean look of grey and white. Bungalows also look great with crisp white window sills.

What part of the house are you happiest with?

We love the living room. The fresh Resene Concrete colour looks great against our white wooden blinds. It looks out to our patio and has beautiful sunlight coming through the windows, from morning to afternoon.

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

Go with a palette of grey and white, with pops of colour in your decor.

What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?

Choosing the coldest time of year to paint the living room… while being pregnant and not having any curtains. It was a long week!

Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?

Grey! It goes with everything and looks great with bold pops of colour here and there throughout your house.

How did you find working with Resene paint and colours?

We loved using Resene paint – great colour range and quality paint. We will definitely be using Resene in our next project house.

Gone are the tired, apricot walls in this 1950s villa, replaced by a fresh palette of Resene Concrete and Resene White (on the trims).

Deb decided on Resene Concrete (painted in the living room, kitchen area and hallway) and Resene Half Rakaia (painted in the bedrooms) as they were slightly warmer than other greys she’d seen. The trims are in Resene White.
