A well-loved coffee table is key in a country living interior. This table was given a beautiful finish using Resene Crackle, with a basecoat of Resene Nero and topcoat of Resene Castaway.
Bring the country look to your home
If you love the country look, but live a fair distance from anywhere remotely rural, that's okay. There's a way for city dwellers to integrate all the charm and atmosphere of country living into their home by adding a few key elements. Stylist Vanessa Nouwens shows us how using rustic Resene paint colours and clever design tricks.
Get comfortable
If you think about traditional country living, communities are at the heart. Having a place to spend quality time with each other is important and well used. A great way to introduce this is in your living room, making it as cosy and comfortable as possible... and it can be done in an effortless, natural way. Look to soft couches and occasional chairs that you can sink into, and pair with a woolly throw, a low coffee table to serve tea and cake, and other elements that make it feel it like home, from firewood at the ready, to magazines to read and escape with.
Keep colours warm and rustic
As in any home, the colour palette plays a huge role in setting the tone. Rustic colours win the day, bringing the warmth and feel of countryside living. Here, Vanessa has contrasted two Resene browns, going lighter on the walls with Resene Road Trip, and staining the floors in dark chocolatey Resene Bark. The fireplace surround is made into a strong feature, painted in sumptuous Resene Dark Side. Then, there's a lovely balance of light and dark, with a few accessories painted in Resene Truffle and subtle warm colours coming through the painted firewood.
Don't overwhelm
This look is cosy, not cluttered. Definitely go big on a soft floor rug and woolly throw (the chunkier the better), and complement with a few decorative details; think logs by the fireplace, a repurposed wood ladder used as a magazine rack, and an art print that reminds you of days escaping to the countryside.
