Amanda brings cool design to classic villa

23 Nov 2017

With original pressed ceilings, high stud height and classic villa features, this North Auckland home was already in great shape. So when Amanda Neill of Designworx was asked to design the interior scheme, the homeowners' brief was clear... create a quirky statement in some of the elements, but still maintain the character of the home.

Choosing Resene neutrals for the walls, with bold splashes of yellow woven into the soft furnishing, Amanda has successfully combined modern and traditional finishes.

Such is the beauty of its finish, the home was chosen to be part of this year's Fine Homes Tour of Devonport, a charity event that tours 10 beautiful homes in the Devonport area. Amanda tells us more about designing for the home.

What is the layout of the home?

The house is a large proportioned villa, with a modern extension on the back that connects to the lush back garden and separate studio. It has three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with walk in wardrobe and generous ensuite. It also has an office, two bathrooms, open plan kitchen, dining and living, with a large media room that opens off the lounge.

What was the client’s brief and how do your design and colour choices respond to that?

The clients were interested in creating an open, light and airy space, that caters for family living.

The living areas combined a fresh white background, with bold splashes of yellow woven into the theme in the soft furnishing. The rug design had a slightly deco feel to it, and pulled together the yellows, whites and charcoals through this area.

Sofas were upholstered in a soft silvery velvet, which added a luxe feel to this space.

For an industrial look, pressed metal was integrated into the kitchen splashback and the fireplace facade in the living areas, connecting it to the original pressed metal in other areas and the character of the house.

What was your overall design philosophy?

The design philosophy was to layer up textures, pattern and colour to create an eclectic feeling throughout.

What Resene colours and were used?

The colours were based on a Resene White Pointer and Resene Truffle palette.

What part of the design are you happiest with?

I love the custom-made rug, which really makes a statement. I also love the quirky addition of the one drop of soft yellow linen, in amongst the other white linen drapes.

What was the biggest design challenge for this project?

Connecting all the elements so that there was a flow through the house, while making sure each space had its own character.

The Fine Homes Tour of Devonport is organised by Devonport Rotary and Bayleys Real Estate Ltd. This year the event raised a net profit of $39,000 for charities, donating $10,000 each to Dementia Auckland, Cure Kids, and Plunket NZ with the remaining going to the Devonport Rotary Charitable Trust.

The home combines modern and traditional finishes, with walls in the living room painted in Resene Half Truffle.

Part of the design brief was to create an open, light and airy space. This was achieved in the kitchen with an open plan layout, walls painted in Resene Half Truffle and plenty of sources for natural light.

The kitchen and living area lead out to a large deck and backyard, catching plenty of sunlight. The walls in the kitchen are painted in Resene Half Truffle and the exterior is painted in Resene Half Stack.

Contemporary meets classic once again in the bedrooms, with walls painted in Resene Quarter White Pointer.

The home is filled with contemporary art and furnishings, modernising the home’s naturally classic looks. The walls are painted in Resene Half Truffle.

The exterior was given a touch up, with weatherboards painted in Resene Half Stack.
